mix tables

Postby verdroid » Sun May 06, 2012 10:41 pm

so, this is a question that's perfect for the geek corner [smile]
any one who can tell a little about mixtables working with ableton (or other daw)?
i have a mic and i have one 'line in' -> no prob, i click the 'in' button on a channel in ableton
and that channel will play my mic.
suppose i have a hardware synth, a guitar, a mic and a drummachine. these are 4 devices i want to mix/control in ableton. (on 4 different channels)
how can this be done ? ?
probably it's some special mixtable linked to your pc with usb, also i often see the word 'firewire'.
but the problem is that i'm to [crazy] to understand this....(i even don't know what eq or a square wave is [blush] )

You'd want some sort of USB/Firewire mixer or soundcard with more than one line-in (I don't know which one specifically, but I'd recommend searching for external USB soundcards).
After plugging it in, Ableton Live (or any other DAW) should recognize it.
You'd then be able to select each individual input (usually stereo: channel 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and so on) on the soundcard for each channel in Ableton Live.

These two drop-downs are important when selecting your soundcard and channels.

jep, searching the net did get me some answers about that FIRE-Wire mix table.
first off: it's expensive, and i toughed riding mtb wasn't cheap. if you compare that to music, mtb is very cheap!
you'll pay between $1000-$2000 easily. guess i'm gonna record every toy seperately for now, that requires a 3.5mm male/male jack wich is way cheaper [nea]

got this new cool set-up to play with for now :) 25/06/2012

the main audio out from my pc goes to channel 2 on the mixtable
the headphone audio out goes trough the effects to channel 1 on the mixtable

that means real quick distortion on the go: switch-switch [blues]

the mixtable's main can go to that 'micro stereo device' wich records tape cassets

The main difference between USB and Firewire is the data transmission speed : you can transfer faster with Firewire, which is very useful when you do video, because the amount of datas to transfer is bigger.

I don't know a lot about music devices, but I was pretty amazed that my PC did recognize in one instant the Alesis Multimix 8 USB that SNM gave me. I think just with this type of device with multiple inputs and a good music software, you can manage your sources, because thanks to USB, the device do communicate easily with the software, that can control your sources.

Sorry that's all the infos I can give.
BTW, gratz for your new equipment =)
